Cavoodle Breed Information

The Cavoodle (also known as Cavapoo) is a popular crossbreed between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle (Toy or Miniature). Known for their affectionate nature and low-shedding coats, Cavoodles are often chosen as companion dogs for individuals, couples, and families alike. At Merle Cavoodle, we breed first-generation (F1) and F1B Cavoodles, depending on the pairing, and aim to raise well-adjusted puppies suited to loving homes.

General Characteristics

Please note: traits can vary between individual dogs.
  • Size: Generally ranges from 25 cm to 38 cm tall at the shoulder
  • Weight: Typically 5 to 12 kg, depending on the size of the Poodle parent (Toy or Miniature)
  • Coat: Can vary from wavy to curly; usually low to moderately shedding
  • Colours: Common coat colours include apricot, red, cream, white, ruby, parti, and merle variations
Coats require regular grooming and maintenance to prevent matting and maintain skin health.

Temperament

Cavoodles are generally described as:
  • Gentle and people-oriented
  • Responsive to training and eager to please
  • Enjoying human company and social interaction
  • Suitable for indoor living and moderate activity levels
As with all dogs, temperament depends on individual genetics, socialisation, and environment. We recommend early training and positive reinforcement to help your puppy grow into a well-behaved adult dog.

 Health Considerations

By combining two breeds, the Cavoodle benefits from genetic diversity, but may still inherit conditions seen in either parent breed.
Potential breed-related concerns may include:
  • Mitral Valve Disease (Cavalier side)
  • Luxating Patella
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
  • Ear infections (due to floppy ears and hair growth in the ear canal)
We aim to reduce health risks by DNA testing our parent dogs and consulting with veterinary professionals throughout the breeding process. However, no breeder can guarantee the future health of any animal.

Ideal Homes

Cavoodles are often suited to:
  • Families with children
  • Singles or couples
  • First-time dog owners
  • Apartments or houses (with appropriate exercise and attention)
They thrive best in homes where they’re included as part of the family and have regular interaction.

Ongoing Care

Cavoodles benefit from:
  • Regular grooming and coat maintenance
  • Daily exercise and mental stimulation
  • Early training and socialisation
  • Routine veterinary care and a balanced diet
We provide new puppy owners with information on grooming, feeding, and settling in to help you get started on the right foot.
